Rhinoplasty Surgery
Rhinoplasty surgery, also known as nose surgery, is the most common form of
cosmetic or plastic facial surgery performed today. Rhinoplasty can be used to
alter the shape of the nose by enlarging or reducing its size, narrowing the
width of the nostrils, removing a hump or changing the shape of the tip or the
bridge, and sometimes changing the angle between the nose and the upper lip.
Rhinoplasty surgery was first introduced around 500 BC, by a physician named
Sushruta. The procedure was originally developed to help restore noses which had
been amputated as a criminal punishment. Rhinoplasty surgery was later
introduced as a strictly cosmetic procedure when in 1898 Dr Jacques Joseph
reduced the size of a patient’s nose to relieve social embarrassment.
Today, Rhinoplasty surgery is used primarily as a cosmetic procedure, but it can
also be used to correct a breathing problem or to repair damage caused by an
accident or injury. Because the nose is the most prominent feature on your face,
it can impact all of the other facial features. Often Rhinoplasty surgery
patients report feeling more confident, and lead more fulfilling lives after a
successful surgery. Rhinoplasty is generally an out-patient procedure, and can
be performed safely in a surgical suite in a plastic surgeon’s private office,
such as the private suite used by Dr Jay Pensler in Chicago.
When choosing a Rhinoplasty surgeon, it is advisable to seek out a board
certified plastic surgeon. This means he or she is certified by the American
Board of Plastic Surgery, or the ABPS. Some physicians who are not board
certified in plastic surgery will perform plastic surgery, but it is not
advisable to use them. It is actually legal in the United States for anyone who
graduated from a medical school to call themselves a surgeon, even if they have
had no formal surgical training. Be sure to carefully research your chosen
physician carefully and make sure they have an impeccable reputation. Choosing a
physician like Dr Jay Pensler, who is not only certified by the ABPS but also
holds a craniofacial degree from Harvard, assures you that your Rhinoplasty
surgery will be performed with competence and care.
